We are in voluntary lockdown here in Florida, with all bars closed and most restaurants doing curbside takeout only. This gave me the opportunity to peruse the property, and I came across some unknown fruit. The fruit is just starting to ripen, and it is about 2 in. in diameter. The skin is thin – much thinner than an orange. Most of the fruit is currently orange colored, but it appears that it turns red when it ripens.

It looks a lot like persimmon, and this area used to be called Persimmon Hollow. For two reasons, however, I do not believe that it is persimmon:
1) This is March, and persimmon are deciduous. We have other persimmon trees on the property that are just starting to leaf out. Here is a photograph of one:

2) The leaves are darker than our persimmons.
Anyway, here is a nice Mini Cooper that was parked at the hardware store last week.

How darling...

Yes, this. Either that or some other similar variety like satsumas.

Yes, it does look like a Clementine. Clementines are supposed to ripen between December and February, so this tree would be a little late, but only by a month.

Well, we live about 40 miles south of Satsuma, FL, so that is a possibility.

Could be a round orange banana.

Especially since the Oscar Mayer Wie nermobile has been sidelined for a while.

Well, we do grow the small Lady Finger bananas here which, in some years, are not a whole lot larger.

It is tempting. They are growing wild in the back part of our property, and there are probably 2-3 dozen that will be ripe soon.

To me it looks like an orange/tangerine cross. Persimmons have a hard flowery leaf at the base of the stem. I’d pick it eat it and figure it out.

Yes, we grow Fuy u persimmons, and these look close but different.

Texture of the peel says citrus to me...

It looks dimpled in the picture, but it is somewhat smooth. Most of the fruit is up high in the tree, and difficult to see clearly.

It could be. It is just odd that we never saw any there before. It is growing wild in the back of our property, in the shade.

You’re joking, right? That’s a mandarin...a type of citrus. As long as they’ve had a bit of water... eminently edible, not as tart as an orange . The fruit inside should segment easily. Very popular eating fruit in Oz. Also makes outstanding marmalade.
